The Center for Demographic Research offers services such as research, publications, sponsored research, and information resource base.
Research
The Center collects and maintains a wide variety of data regarding Alabama’s population, including data produced by the state and federal government. New data sets are continually reviewed in order to stay abreast of changes and trends in the demographic sector. In addition to general research, the results of which are freely shared with the public, the Center also conducts research tailored to individual requests.
Publications
The Alabama Population Data Sheet, published every two years since 1983, is the Center’s most popular publication. Other data sheets are produced periodically, including the Alabama Health Data Sheet (published in conjunction with the Alabama Department of Public Health, Center for Health Statistics) and the Alabama Kids Data Sheet (produced jointly by the Center and VOICES for Alabama’s Children). Thematic publications in the form of short monographs are also released periodically. Past examples include Aging in Alabama: Uncertain Future for the State’s Elderly; The Black Male in Alabama; Making the Grade: Educational Attainment and School Enrollment Patterns in Alabama; and Population Changes in Alabama’s Black Belt: 1880-1990. All publications produced by the Center are available to the public upon request.
Sponsored Research
Throughout our history, the Center has engaged in a wide variety of sponsored research activities with clients ranging from private agencies to departments of local, state, and federal government. We are able to collect, analyze, and interpret data, as well as produce written reports on a variety of demographic topics.
Information Resource Base
The Center fills over 400 requests for information and assistance each year. Requests are received from businesses and agencies throughout Alabama, as well as from other states, and range from assistance in conducting population surveys to determining the population total of a particular county.
